Alternative to Blogads

by Sooz on September 27, 2005

I am a fan of alternatives, also known as options. For example, WhizSpark is (more or less, though they are so much more) an alternative to evite. I could set up my own ad server for Exploit Boston, but I’d rather not. Are there any alternatives to Blogads worth checking out?

DIRECTIONS …

by car: http://tinyurl.com/c676n

by MBTA: The nearest MBTA station is Roslindale Village on the Needham Commuter Rail Line. You can also take the Orange Line to Forest Hills and take most any bus to Roslindale Village. (Ask the bus driver to make sure the bus does indeed go to Roslindale Village. Only a few buses from Forest Hills do *not* go to Roslindale Village.)

For specific MBTA directions from your departure point to Roslindale Village, use the MBTA’s trip finder.

When you arrive at the Roslindale Village Commuter Rail Station, it’s a 3-4 minute walk to the community center. You’ll want to go down South Street. Cross the parking lot, you’ll see a Citizen’s Bank on left. Walk straight onto South Street. There’s a Delfino’s on the right. Stay straight on South Street until Adam’s Park. The community center is on the other side of Adam’s Park. 3-4 minutes. There’s a map of the area near the community center.

Bucketworks is also a place for businesses. Five companies are located here within the facility, and use our Business Services to grow their success–you can grow your company here, too!

We also host a wide variety of cultural and performance events, demonstrating the creativity of Milwaukee.

You can rent our space to have your own creative meeting, party, wedding or other event.

Being a Jerk is a Choice

by Sooz on September 26, 2005

I’m always intrigued by people who use their personal websites/weblogs as a place to complain about others. What’s the point? I think we should use our powers for more good than evil. But I guess that’s no fun and isn’t provacative or edgy.

Pumpkins and Josh Cole on October 22

by Sooz on September 25, 2005

There are two events on Saturday, October 22nd that look like a lot of fun. First up is the Life is Good Pumpkin Festival on the Boston Common. They’re trying to break the Guinness Book of World Records for most lit jack-o-lanterns. Last year there were over 50,000 people who attended the fest. You can bring an already carved pumpkin and candle or bring a pumpkin to carve on the Boston Common. The is held by the in New Hampshire with 28,952 lit pumpkins. The Keene festival is also taking place on October 22nd. Later that night are having a CD Release party at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge for Hipicriticool. And speaking of the Lizard Lounge, they finally have .

The Latest From WhizSpark

by Sooz on September 21, 2005

WhizSpark launched a new program offering their updated premium event website builder tools to qualified event planners at no cost. I look forward to seeing how this takes off.

Pete Caputa has been reaching out to bloggers today and has tidbits on his weblog about what people are saying about WhizSpark. I’m not sure if there are any bloggers yet (besides me) who use WhizSpark’s tools, too.

by Sooz on September 19, 2005

I took a bunch of photos at friends’ wedding on Sunday at the in Boston. What a cool spot to have an outdoor wedding! Fortunately the weather cooperated and none of us had to regret not bringing umbrellas. All the photos I took outside are over on flickr. The dinner and reception photos will be up soon.

Special Deal on Web Hosting at DreamHost

by Sooz on September 17, 2005

If you checked out the top search queries on Technorati the past week you probably saw DreamHost in the top five for a few days. It was a little weird to see them above Hurricane Katrina for a day. There was a power outage in Los Angeles that affected their data center building. My websites were down for about half a day. You can read about what happened on their blog.

If you are looking for a web host, I have a special little code that will save you a few bucks at . I’ve had my sites hosted there since 1998 (minus about a year elsewhere around 1999) on their “Code Monster” plan. Despite the power outage the other day, I still recommend them if you are looking for an inexpensive shared hosting plan. I don’t have any experience with their dedicated web hosting service.

If you use the code “SOOZHOSTINGDEAL”, you’ll save $50 off of monthly plans (it covers the $49.95 setup fee) or if you’d rather pay for a year or two upfront, you’ll pocket $25 with that discount code since the yearly plans do not have a setup fee. DreamHost has an awesome referral plan which gives me a $97 kickback when someone signs up directly through my referral. This special little deal takes part of that $97 and gives it to you as thanks for signing up through me.

The Code Monster plan I’ve got includes the following goodies:

• 15360 MB Storage (A special sale. it’s usually 7680 MB.)
• 192 GB Transfer ($0.50/GB extra)
• 15 Domains Hosted
• 75 Sub-Domains Hosted
• 3000 Mailboxes
• 375 Shell Users

Standard Features Including:
• One FREE .com/.net/.org/.info domain
• CGI/FrontPage 2002 Extensions
• PHP4, perl, python, C, C++
• Unlimited MySQL Databases
• IMAP, POP3, and Web-Based email access
• Unlimited email aliases, auto-responders, announcement lists, discussion lists, media streaming
One-click installs for , , , and .
• Custom DNS
• Telephone Callback Support
• Miva Merchant
• Anonymous FTP

Check out this web hosting comparison chart to learn more about each of their plans: Crazy Domain Insane, Sweet Dreams, Code Monster and Strictly Business. Each plan includes a free year of domain name registration (for one domain). They charge $14.95/year otherwise. That’s not all that competitive so you can always use that first free year and then move to another domain registrar around the 10th month.

If you sign up with DreamHost, don’t forget to use this special code to save $50 on monthly plans and $25 on yearly plans: SOOZHOSTINGDEAL.
