Pete Caputa wrote about his dislike of the term “unconference.” Personally, I think unconference is about as useless of a word as “Web 2.0.” The South by Southwest Interactive Festival is by far one of the best event/collection of humans/whatever you want to call it — oh, conferences — that I’ve been to. And it is clearly a conference. The great thing about that event is the wilingness of the organizer (Hugh Forrest) to be open to new ideas. When Ryan Gantz and I asked him about setting up the interactive playpen at the festival, we weren’t really sure what he’d think. But Hugh is awesome and he was willing to give it a try. It turned out to be one of the simplest things to set up and one of the funnest. But there’s still a core conference at SXSWi that has structure, sponsors and all that other un-unconference stuff.

My new web/tech/creative recruiting job at Randstad
I recently started working as a technical/web/creative recruiter at Randstad’s office in Harvard Square. It’s a contract job for the summer and it might last longer depending on how it goes. Anyone who has known me for more than ten minutes most likely knows that I’ve always been useful at helping match people up with job opportunities. For whatever reason, I have a good memory when it comes to remembering a random assortment of people and their interests and work backgrounds. It’s interesting to do this sort of work as an actual job.
I’m not doing sales or interacting with clients. That might change at some point, but for now I definitely enjoy working with the “talent” so that I can help people find jobs they really want — not try to get people to “take” a job that happens to be available.
Here’s my new work contact information: susan.kaup@us.randstad.com / 617-497-8261.
Now that I’ve got my work world settled for the summer, I’ll probably be writing more here.

Adam Gaffin Offers A Few Tips for Christopher Lydon
When I read Christopher Lydon’s description about the “New England Common” discussion he’ll be leading at the upcoming Media Giraffe conference, I was a little confused. He writes:
[W]hy don’t we at the core of New England have something like the group blogs we admire — the aggregative web power — at the Huffington Post, say, or Daily Kos, or Talking Points Memo and now, TPM Cafe? Isn’t there a way to build such a thing in Boston and Massachusetts while a very good governor’s race is building steam?
As Adam Gaffin at Universal Hub points out here, there is Blue Mass Group. And hey, there’s even Adam’s own Universal Hub. And it’s really not just Adam’s site, anyone can create a free account at UH and post news stories, blog entries, photos, etc.

New times two
I haven’t written much here at sooz.com in a while other than the ocassional game night tidbit. I moved into a new shared office/workspace this past weekend. It’s a big building at 119 Braintree in Allston, home to lots of companies: filmmakers, photographers, web designers, artists, piano repair, architects, fashion designers and lots more. I’m sharing my space with 42 Degrees North Films and a few other audio/film/video people. I’ve got a new job in Harvard Square that I’m starting up in a couple weeks. The plan is to use the workspace in Allston for a few evenings and weekends. I’m experimenting with the idea of not bringing my computer home. After two days, I only have a mild twitch.

Board Game Night with HeyLetsGo on June 6
The gang over at HeyLetsGo are co-hosting Tuesday night’s board game night at the Common Ground along with Exploit Boston. That’s tomorrow, June 6th at 7pm. Michael picked up some new games for us today so we’re up to 40 board and card games. Nice! If you’re on HLG and haven’t added game night to your wish list, head over there and add it.
