Resumes Are Not Job Descriptions

by Sooz on July 6, 2006

My manager at the new jobbyjob pointed that out to me a few days ago. It’s not something I had really thought of before but I think she’s right. The more resumes I look at (all day!), the more I notice that most of us are just regurgitating a job description instead of highlighting accomplishments or telling a story about what we got done at a job.

I agree with you. The last thing an employer wants is to read a resume that sounds like the job ad they just posted and says nothing about the person whose resume it is! I think job hunters have read that using the wording in an ad is a good way to ‘mirror’ their interest and suitability back to a potential employer. But this only works if you include a few facts about yourself and your skills - you have to demonstrate how you fit and not just parrot the ad.
