It came up when we were talking at the Museum of Science earlier today after the Boston Wi-Fi Summit.
Speaking of the Museum of Science, they opened up their internal Wi-Fi network for the summit today. Wouldn't it be great if it was always open or at least in the lobby and outside?

A friend of a friend just got a job working for Event Me in New York City.

For event attendees:

Event Me's free service informs more than 34,000 subscribers about unique professional, cultural, and fun events in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Portland, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. More cities coming soon.

For event organizers:

To promote events, simply describe your event and desired audience to us. We will then select those subscribers who are most interested in your event and, upon your approval, email them with your invitation. Learn more.

Our promotion fee depends on the number of people being invited and the kind of event. Typically, it breaks down to 3 to 12 cents per email. Of course, you can always adjust the targeting criteria and increase or decrease the list size in order to make our service match your budget and promotional needs.

I checked out one of their sample event invitations that they send out on behalf of event organizers/promoters and it seems like a pretty basic web page with no ticketing or RSVP functionality -- just a link to the event's website. Maybe they should conspire with WhizSpark as a sort of reseller/add-on service for event organizers/promoters who want the sort of event planning tools WhizSpark is working on?

Earlier this week Shimon Rura and I hosted the second Genius Workshop dinner along with about 30 people who joined us. The idea is to bring tech innovators, creators and thinkers together in a room for dinner to conspire about individual projects and enjoy a good meal. Two people mentioned that we should have a more formal networking structure because they are serious about their business and focused on getting things done. Good for them, eh? The thing is, I think that most anyone you talk to can be of interest to you if you are open to the possibility. My event style for things I host is ideally a combination of networking and community. Many networking events will prepare a spreadsheet of participants' contact information and backgrounds for everyone to review prior to the event so that you can determine who is worthy of your time. Whenever I'm presented with something like that I try to find at least a few people on the list who have absolutely nothing to do with what I am working on or interested in. You just never know. Susan Mernit and I had a related conversation about this during the Mobile Media Conference last weekend in LA and she concurred that she likes to throw in some randomness when inviting people to events. I'm glad I'm not alone!

"Don’t worry cuz I’ve got it / Got the car door / Got the front gate and I / Got my own back / Through the shadows / In my Friday clothes / Through the wardrobe / Through the snow / I have seen a light / I have seen a light / I have seen a light / I have seen a light"

Boston singer-songwriter Rose Polenzani has a new tune available for (free) MP3 download. Grab it now in Rose's music shoppe. It will be replaced with another tune sooner or later. It's called "I Have Seen a Light." Rose describes it best:

It's a really simple song, kind of repetitive. It just gets bigger and bigger. That's my thing. Anyway, the 'light' isn't the one you might be thinking of, it's something kind of hard and real like a medicine ball.

So.Very.Good. Grab your headphones and turn up the volume. If you like that song, buy her album October that came out last Fall.

This is old news as of a couple weeks ago but I haven't had a chance to write about it until now. Meetup is now charging a monthly fee to organizers. I currently run one Meetup group: The Boston Wi-Fi Meetup and I plan to pay the $9/month (it goes up to $19/month in 2007). Some people seem to think it's a tragedy that Meetup is asking us to pay. I have no problem with the fee. They're even setting things up so that group members can chip in. What's the big deal? Meetup has done a great job of attracting a lot of people to their site and there's no way I could ever reach out to everyone in the Boston area interested in WiFi on my own or even with the help of our newish BostonWAG organization. I appreciate the services they provide. Maybe Meetup could have done a better job of getting money out of venues and advertisers; but $9/month is really not a big deal. If you can't find $9 worth of value in what they offer then I don't really see why you'd use their service in the first place. Nine dollars! I'm sure we could find individuals or companies who might like to sponsor the Boston Wi-Fi Meetup to offset the costs, too.

The people who are whining about this remind me about the people I've encountered who don't understand (all that quickly) the value of WhizSpark's services either.

In more recent news, Michael and I concluded our 10 day road trip this morning when he dropped me off at Dulles Airport at 6AM so I could catch a 7AM flight to Los Angeles for The Media Center's (@ American Press Institute) Mobile Media Conference. I discovered earlier that I forgot the USB cord thingie to download audio files for podcasts in Michael's car. So, unless I find a Radio Shack that sells the cord relatively cheaply, audio tidbits will have to wait until Sunday. Hopefully I don't sound like a broken record but mega thanks to Susan Mernit for inviting me to speak on a panel with her at the conference about community wireless. I'm excited (albiet very sleepy) to be here! Also, it's worth noting that Susan does the best job of introducing people in the hallways between sessions, etc. I really admire her down-to-earth and approachable style.
