- [Rock and Roll Book Club “meeting” and The Old Ceremony in Boston on February 16th](https://www.sooz.com/rock-and-roll-book-club-meeting-and-the-old-ceremony-in-boston-on-february-16th/): Central Square is truly the place to be on Wednesday, February 16th. First up is the Rock and Roll Book Club's first book club "meeting." This is a project I started up this past November. We chose Steve Almond's book "Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life" as the inaugural book club selection for January 2011. Steve was an exceptional author and participant to work with: he blogged on the website and helped get the word out. Everyone who read the book (or who aspired to read the book or who wants to hang out with other people who mostly read the book) will be meeting up on the 16th 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Enormous Room in Central Square. The original plan included Steve attending the meeting and playing his favorite "guilty pleasure" songs along with guilty favorites of book club members. A family obligation has come up so he won't be able to join us. Steve has graciously offered to make a CD for us -- so all is not lost! He's local so hopefully we'll see him at a future book club meeting. Say you'll be at the Rock and Roll Book Club meeting on Facebook. (And if you don't want to RSVP on Facebook, you can also just show up.) Despite running a music website off and on for a long time, I'd never consider myself a music critique or reviewer. You couldn't pay me enough money to write about a band I'm not into and I hate to describe what music sounds like and what you might want to compare it to. (Aside: I also don't get excited when referred to as a "music blogger." Who doesn't have a blog these days? Next time you see me, please greet me with "Hello, long time U.S. Postal customer.") So when I recommend a concert to attend after the Rock and Roll Book Club meeting on the 16th, I mostly want to insert 345 exclamation marks. The Old Ceremony doesn't seem to be all that well known around here and admittedly, I didn't know about the band until a couple years ago when Abby clued me into their music after she moved to their homeland of North Carolina a few years ago. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (plus a lot more) This is a tremendously excellent superbly awesome delightful band. I'm excited to finally see them live. Strangely enough, it's an all ages show on a school night. I'm guessing that's because of Rooney, one of the other bands who is also playing. Built with Drupal Gardens, the forum is the companion website to a survey about the future of open source and includes "Blog the Future" where industry leaders share thoughts about where open source is headed in 2011 and beyond. My last Drupal project was as a project manager consultant at Pearson Education in 2009 working on the redesign of MyMathLab.com and its move to Drupal. I'm excited to be working in the world of Drupal again! My interest in Drupal began back in 2007 when I worked at BostonNOW newspaper managing the web department and the redesign and transition to Drupal. In 2008 I was the event planner for DrupalCon Boston.

The idea is that we'll all read the same rock music related book each month. The book will either be directly about rock music or written by a musician-turned-author. Most of us spend way too much time at our computers so we'll also be tweeting about the book and writing about it on our websites.

They're located at 9 Sanborn Court towards the back of the same building that Ronnarong is in across the alley from The Independent. I took a look at the menu information on the website and it mentions that they can accommodate dietary restrictions beyond just omnivores and vegetarians. Looks like my vegan friends should join me there sooner than later!

It's happening Thursday, October 14th 6:30-9:30pm at Microsoft NERD (One Memorial Drive, Cambridge -- near Kendall Square.) The game night at NERD will be happening every 1-2 months to bring together tech and startups in Boston for something other than the usual networking event. And of course there will be beer and pizza (vegan and vegetarian options, too).
- [Trying out a recipe: Post Punk Kitchen vegan tofu scramble](https://www.sooz.com/trying-out-a-recipe-post-punk-kitchen-vegan-tofu-scramble/): I've been making a lot of tofu scramble since I became vegan in March; but I hadn't tried out Post Punk Kitchen's recipe yet. I finally made it for lunch today. Unfortunately I didn't have all the ingredients that their vegan tofu scramble recipe called for (including nutritional yeast) but I did have all the spices so I used my variation on the vegetables: brussels sprout, peas and vidalia onions. The resulting scramble was very tasty; but I have a feeling that the nutritional yeast is an important ingredient. I'll have a legit vegan kitchen when I buy some of that -- it's included in many recipes.

- [New Photo: Tecate Ranch Whole Wheat Bread](https://www.sooz.com/new-photo-tecate-ranch-whole-wheat-bread/): My roommate Chris is an avid bread maker and has just about every ingredient you can think of when it comes to making bread. I flipped through his bread machine book: The Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook and found Tecate Ranch Whole Wheat Bread. It was smaller than I expected; but still tasty. That's probably because I started and stopped the machine a few times because I wasn't sure if it was turned on. (Bread making novice? Perhaps.) And it's vegan, too -- no dairy!

Unfortunately "work" and "sit in the hammock" don't seem to happen at the same time. Do they make hammock desks? ;)

- [Gathering of geeks and techies in Boston this weekend: BarCamp Boston 5, April 17-18](https://www.sooz.com/gathering-of-geeks-and-techies-in-boston-this-weekend-barcamp-boston-5-april-17-18/): The annual gathering and unconference for Boston area geeks and techies is coming up this weekend. BarCampBoston 5 is happening at MIT's Stata Center on Saturday, April 17th and Sunday, April 18th. As of earlier today there were already 505 people registered to attend. Looks like this could be the biggest BarCampBoston in the five years it's been happening! On Saturday, the event happens 9am-6pm and Sunday it happens 9am-5pm.

- [South by Southwest Interactive 2010 is almost here!](https://www.sooz.com/south-by-southwest-interactive-2010-is-almost-here/): Here's another one of those mega deluxe understatements of the year: I'm really excited about heading down to Austin in a few days for the South by Southwest Interactive Festival. This will be my 10th year. I missed it in 2009 so I'm *extra* excited about making it this year. This time around I planned early and grabbed a two-bedroom suite at The Residence Inn, also known as The SoozSuite and I'll be sharing it with a group of friends. @AlWillis who is traveling to Austin for his first SXSW Interactive asked if I had any advice. Basically, all you need to know is you are going to have one of the best week's of your life -- and then you'll do it all over again next year.

Gathering around a small table with ambient mics, they play a mix of originals and covers. It was the first time I had seen them since 1996 or 1997. Crazy, yet true! They were as awesome live as I remembered them all those years ago. They've got a new EP out called "Hit & Run" that you can buy on iTunes. And why wouldn't you? It's awesome and only $3.99. Bargain! Check it out and buy it. Special thanks to the pesky drunk couple who I somehow inspired to move away from the front of the stage so people around me could enjoy the show without the two of them falling over on us. ;)

- [SoozMix: An iTunes Genius mix based on “Born” by Over The Rhine](https://www.sooz.com/soozmix-an-itunes-genius-mix-based-on-born-by-over-the-rhine/): iTunes' Genius is an awesome way to rediscover music you already have but may not have listened to in a while. Yesterday I told it to make a mix based on "Born" by Over The Rhine. The result was a perfect mix for a moody, chilly Sunday afternoon. It includes songs by Over The Rhine, Patty Griffin, Great Northern, Gillian Welch, Calexico & Iron Wine, Nickel Creek, Dar Williams, Ray LaMontagne and Sarah Harmer.
- [Food Photography and Cooking: Coconut Rum Sorbet with Dark Chocolate Crisp and Basil](https://www.sooz.com/food-photography-and-cooking-coconut-rum-sorbet-with-dark-chocolate-crisp-and-basil/): When vegan friends were coming over for dinner a couple months ago I wanted to make a dessert that they could eat. The first thing that came to mind was sorbet. I found a simple recipe for coconut sorbet on Epicurious and decided it needed a little rum in it, too (instead of the rum extract that the recipe called for). Recently my roommate Chris suggested I use some of his fresh basil and dark chocolate crisps. This photo is the result!

Inspiration for the name of the group comes from a character in the movie Brazil (check out the video clip below).
- [Inspired and Inspiring — “A Watched Pot” Comes To Life For Bleu](https://www.sooz.com/inspired-and-inspiring-a-watched-pot-comes-to-life-for-bleu/): Unfortunately it's not all that unique of a story -- amazing band gets signed to a big label, releases an album and then gets dropped right as their next album is about to be released. Or in the case of two of my favorite Boston bands in the late 1990s -- Talking to Animals and Splashdown -- the labels produced each band's first album but never released them. Not that I'm still bitter or anything.
- [Concert Photos: The Blizzard of 78, The Lights Out and Old Jack at Church](https://www.sooz.com/concert-photos-the-blizzard-of-78-the-lights-out-and-old-jack-at-church/): Somehow two of my favorite bands came together with limited intervention on my part: The Blizzard of 78 and The Lights Out shared the stage at Church on June 25th. They were joined by a new favorite, Old Jack. I had a day left on the Nikon 1.4 85mm lens I was renting this week and snapped these photos at the show. The lighting in the club seemed to be intentionally awful (too much red!) so I made most of the photos black and white. View the full set of photos on Flickr.
- [Silver Performance Artist Statue in Harvard Square](https://www.sooz.com/silver-performance-artist-statue-in-harvard-square/): I shot this photo in Harvard Square on Saturday of Epiphany, a performance artist who painted and dressed herself in silver.
